2017 - 2018 Academic Year updates and reminders

  •
  • Welcome back! We are looking forward to another successful school year with our CHS community. Please see the following highlights of our recently updated Code of Conduct. A link to the full document is included below.
  •
  • CHS offers many opportunities for students to receive extra help, or make up work. We have a unique opportunity for students, called 5th block. Students may be assigned to this block, or may stay voluntary to meet with teachers, make up work after absences, or get individual attention to support classroom instruction. 5th block is from 2:15-2:45, with transportation home provided at 2:45 (Monday through Thursday). 5th block is HIGHLY encouraged for all students to stay for individual attention and help in all subjects.

We also offer the "After School Supervision Center" (ASSC) every school day from 2:50-5:00. Students can sign into the ASSC while waiting for practice or other activities. They can take advantage of this time by using it to read, use the computers for school work, collaborate with others for projects, and complete other class assignments. Transportation is also provided at 5:15 for all students Monday through Friday.

This year, we will continue to use the BYOD (bring your own device) policy at the High School. Students are reminded that we have a "Responsible Use Agreement" at CHS. Our students are expected to protect their individual user names, passwords, and devices from theft or misuse.

Cell phones are also allowed in certain areas of the building according to the new policy. The school has three different zones for cellular device use.

Red Zone - cellular devices are absolutely not allowed (examples: restrooms, locker rooms, hallways, etc.).

Yellow Zone - cellular devices are allowed at the teacher or supervisor's discretion.  Students are expected to ask the teacher for clarity and permission.

Green Zone - students are free to use their cellular devices responsibly (example: cafeteria).

Students, parents, and guardians are reminded that CHS has a dress code. Major points of this dress code include: clothing must be safe and appropriate, and not disrupt the educational process; underwear of all kinds must be completely covered; hats, bandannas, hoods, head coverings are not allowed (except for medical or religious purposes); clothing must not be vulgar, obscene, discriminatory or promote the use of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs; skirts and shorts must be at least as long as the student's fingertips when hands are extended down the side while standing straight and shoulders are relaxed; straps on all tops must be at least three fingers in width.

Students are allowed to carry clear, plastic water bottles with them. No other beverages are permitted.

We will also continue our "no bag" policy. To ensure the safety and security of our students and staff, no backpacks, purses, or string bags are permitted during the school day. Students are expected to deliver their bags to their lockers and store them throughout the school day.

Please view our academic eligibility policy using the link below.

I was fortunate to join the CCSD staff last January. I have spent much of the past six months getting to know the students, staff and community at CHS. I look forward to continuing to work with all of these groups and continuing to learn about the District and Carthage community!

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the office at 493-5030 during regular school hours.
